WORLD STATE MANUAL
+ Editorial + Print
+ Manual +Typographic
A Brave New World had been on my ‘to read’ list for quite some time, so it came as a perfect opportunity to dive in and produce a project based around it. The book is as significant today as it was when it was first released. The ideals of consumerist culture and a general sway towards a more self involved future is truer today than it ever was. Whilst the underlying themes have a serious message to them, it was the rich imagery; often far fetched, that captured my attention to produce a vivid image of life in Huxley’s world state. To remind us that huxleys vision is very real indeed, I wanted to transform the fiction into fact; to take the imagery of the industrial conveyor belts and conditioning centres and capture it all in a manual, intended for people living in the world state as if it had become a reality and the book was their reference for education. I re-wrote descriptive details from three solid chapters as well as extracts throughout the book to serve as my basis for type. Over several weeks of development, I concluded to sort each section into colour coded chapters accompanied by illustrated typographic treatments that I felt justified the content of the text as a visual. In key, I still wanted to maintain the readability and function of a manual as it was intended, but with a stylistic trait of brutalist and modernist inspired typographic styling in keeping with Huxley’s described vision, whilst separating the document from the pastiche of a typical manual.

MULTIVERSE ME
+ Print + Icon Design
+ Poster Work
Multiverse Me is based around the idea of multiple universes where significant events in my life create tangents, resulting in a chain of changes and a new timeline. Due to format constraints and the sheer amount of events to consider, I chose to focus on only a significant selection to base the timelines on. To visualise the events, I took to designing a poster for each of my four separate timelines to be printed onto acetate and placed over a light box so that they could be seen individually or as a whole piece. Each event in the timeline has been allocated a series of icons that correspond to a key indicating what influences it has had on different areas of my life and theoretical lives.

SONNIFY.NET
+ Web + Glitch + Databending
+ Test Screens + Screen
An exploration into sonnifying images using Audacity. This is the process of importing an image as RAW data into an audio editing program (in this case Audacity) and using effects intended for audio such as Reverb and Phasers, to manipulate the image for export as an image one again. The project is intended as an online resource for artists and designers interested in using sonnification techniques to learn about the process in order to inspire a higher level of conceptual art using these methods. Whilst the process is to some degree generative, the mechanics involved are predictable to an extent, with designed test screens used to verify and explain these results. The outcome is a work in progress website that I hope to launch soon as an open resource available to those who need/are interested in it.

VIER MAGAZINE
SUBVERSION
+ Print + Editorial + Collaboration
+ Magazine + Typogrpahy
A collaborative magazine of 48 pages exploring the theme of Subversion.
The magazine consists of select news and articles from pre-existing press as the basis for satire, flipping scenarios upside down to encapsulate the bizarre. The aesthetic of the magazine is coined as ‘tidy grunge’: a mix of post-modern grunge typography akin to the work of David Carson, crossed with the grid structure and alignment of International style.

THE LOST CITY
+ Print + Mapping + Brutalism
+ Architecture + Packaging
The lost city is a project collating the theoretical template of an ideal city grid combined with the radical ideals of Modernist and Brutalist architecture that sought to destroy the old, ornamental past in place of a future of jutting concrete structures, high rises and cars. The project is comprised of a building ‘map’ outlining colour coded districts and the real life buildings that make them up sourced from Google Earth. Along with it are 15 wedges that correspond to the 4 district types, all packaged in a triangular sheath. The city structure is based on urban planning propositions of modernist origins such as Robert Bruce’s plan for a new Glasgow: the ‘Bruce Report’ and Le Corbusier’s ‘Ville Radieuse’.

A FAIRYTALE ABOUT
HAPPINESS
+ Print + Typography
+ Poster Work
A graphic interpretation of Kurt Schwitters' Merz fairytale of the same name consisting of three posters bound together with a rotary fold. The concept uses coloured glasses to represent looking through each character's point of view whilst the folding mechanism represents a 'grass is always greener syndrome' chain where each person believes the next's happiness to be greater than their own, resulting in an endless rotation and the question of whether anyone on earth is truly and devoutly happy left unanswered. For more context, please to read the original fairytale!

THE UNDISCOVERED
COUNTRY
+ Print + Packaging + ISTD
+ Book +Concrete Poetry
Everyone who has ever lived, who are living and who are yet to live must inevitably come to terms with their mortality, yet it’s never an easy subject. The notion of death has sparked creative output and complex emotions amongst philosophers and artists of all practices for centuries. In this instance, poets have explored the plains of death as best they can; by constructing elaborate metaphors that cast an eerie beauty all of their own. It was this beauty that provided the concepts of vibrant imagery; perfect for a range of poems from a typographers perspective, in this case of a concrete kind. As we cross into the unknown, the boundaries of conventional page structure are nullified. Instead the poems manifest themselves over mountains, across valleys and past the margins allowing the format to actively compliment the message; after all, the act of death itself does not follow boundaries.
Originally created for the 2016 ISTD brief of the same name, I chose to round up a selection of poems exploring the theme of death from a range of angles to be interpreted as concrete typographic illustrations. The outcome is a concertina folded book consisting of 10 poems spread over one to three pages each. Accompanying each is a short critical description that discusses the concepts and visual language behind each interpretation. An icon in the corner of each poem indicates how many pages that particular poem is spread over and whether it should be read in portrait or landscape.

BY XARA
+ Logo Design + Print
+ Fashion Startup
Logo for Birmingham based unisex Fashion startup ’BY XARA’ under the requirements that that it must be in their specific font and black and white. The main concept behind the imagery is the combination of a clothes tag and the diagonal lines of the letter X in XARA. Using these parameters, I worked with the client to produce two logos; one for horizontal display and a second for vertical.
